Beyond Conventional Investing. Understanding Advanced Strategies.Specialized Investment Funds, commonly known as SIFs, are a SEBI-regulated investment product framework introduced to provide eligible investors with access to investment strategies offering greater flexibility than conventional mutual fund schemes.
SIFs are intended to occupy a space between traditional mutual funds and more sophisticated investment arrangements such as Portfolio Management Services and Alternative Investment Funds.
They allow asset managers to implement specified investment strategies, including permitted long–short approaches and derivatives exposure, within regulatory limits.
Traditional mutual fund schemes generally operate within established investment categories and portfolio restrictions.
SIFs provide additional flexibility in portfolio construction and investment strategies, subject to their mandates and regulatory requirements.
This flexibility may allow fund managers to pursue opportunities across different market conditions, but it also introduces additional complexity.
A long position generally seeks to benefit when the value of an investment rises.
A short position, or permitted short exposure through derivatives, may benefit when the value of the underlying security or index declines.
Combining long and short exposures can help a fund manager express different market views or manage certain portfolio risks.
However, these strategies can generate losses, and their outcomes depend on market conditions, execution and risk management.
Depending on the permitted product framework, SIFs may offer equity-oriented, debt-oriented and hybrid strategies with different portfolio structures.
The availability, investment restrictions, derivative exposure, redemption arrangements and risk profile depend on the particular strategy.
Under the original SIF framework, the minimum investment threshold was ₹10 lakh at the investor level across SIF strategies of a mutual fund, subject to applicable exemptions and regulatory provisions.
Investors should verify the prevailing eligibility rules and product-specific requirements before investing.

We believe that SIF strategies should be understood through their actual investment mandate, portfolio exposures, permitted instruments, liquidity terms and risks rather than being evaluated solely on return expectations.
SIF investments are subject to market and strategy-specific risks. Investors should read the relevant offer documents and disclosures carefully.
